Juventus has extended Italy international Nicolo Fagioli’s contract until 2028, the Italian football club announced on Tuesday, suspending the athlete for seven months for illegal betting on his staff.
“Juventus is pleased to announce that Fagioli’s contract has been extended until 30 June 2028,” the statement said.
The 22-year-old midfielder, one of the hopes of Italian football, is serving a seven-month ban, reduced by 12 months from the original term, due to illegal betting.
The suspension prevents him from playing almost the entire 2023/24 season, as it will last until mid-May, after which only the last round of Serie A will remain.
The player was found guilty of betting on games other than those of his club Juve or Cremonese, where he played on loan, and his sentence was commuted for cooperating with the authorities and accepting a program dedicated to gambling addiction. after which the Turin club expressed “full support” to the midfielder.
In October, the Italian Football Federation’s justice department (FIGC) formally sanctioned Fagioli, the first name to emerge in the “scandal” surrounding illegal betting with elite Italian athletes, with midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle receiving 10 months in that case.
