The Authority for the Prevention and Combating of Violence in Sports (APCVD) said on Tuesday that a fan who invaded the Estádio da Luz pitch on Sunday and made obscene gestures has been banned from entering sports venues.
The incident occurred at the end of a game in which Benfica beat rivals Sporting CP 2-1 in stoppage time, with a fan identified by red symbols making inappropriate gestures towards Leonina players.
At that time, it was Argentina national team player Di Maria who prevented Spanish goalkeeper Adan from approaching the fan.
The APCVD said the 31-year-old man, who lives in Cascais, was identified by the Lisbon Metropolitan Sports Information Unit (UMID/Spotters) of the Public Security Police.
As a precautionary measure, fans “are not allowed access to sports facilities until the end of the administrative offense process,” adds the APKVD, which states that if the requirements are not met, “they may be detained by the police.”
The fan faces a fine of one thousand to ten euros and an additional sanction in the form of a ban on access to sports facilities for up to three years.
In the same note, the APCVD also reports that it has opened an administrative offense case to establish the facts and responsibility for the incidents against the Sporting fan.
The situation was widely publicized with images showing a Benfica fan “ripping” the scarf off a Sporting supporter in the stands.
