The man was in pre-trial detention on suspicion of robbing a business of more than €3,000 in the municipality of Ribeira Grande in the Azores, PSP said on Thursday.
According to the regional command of the Public Security Police (PSP) in the Azores, a 40-year-old man was arrested “in flagrante delicto” on November 9 for qualified theft after an alarm went off in a commercial establishment.
Officers from the Ribeira Grande police station in San Miguel responded to the scene and found the door of the business establishment ajar and caught the suspect by surprise, the PSP said in a statement.
According to police, the suspect is “well known to PSP for his constant practice of illegal activities against property to support his consumption habits.”
At the time of the incident, the man was hiding from the authorities and already had with him “some separate items for escaping from the scene” worth more than 3,000 euros, the same police source said.
After going to trial, the suspect was left with “the most serious coercive measure – preventive detention,” he added.
The PSP statement also said that the Ribeira Grande police station was able to recover a safe worth approximately 17 thousand euros and identify the suspect “one day after the crime was committed.”
According to PSP, the suspect, who “admitted to committing the crime,” had a counterfeit key that he used to “enter the home” where the safe was located, “taking advantage of the occupant’s absence” to steal it.
The safe was confiscated and later handed over to its faithful owner.
“Due to a temporary gap, the suspect has been declared an accused, so the process will proceed as usual,” the police said in a statement.
