Italian national team striker Fabio Quaggarella, currently not playing for the club, announced this Sunday his retirement from football at the age of 40, as he is in “unacceptable physical shape” to play.
“I refuse to participate, I have to do it. I am a free agent, but I am in unacceptable physical shape to take the field. I will have a lot of time to think about what my path will be.” Be now,” the striker told Sky Sports in Italy.
Quaggiarella last played for Sampdoria last season, having completed seven-and-a-half seasons with the Genoa badge since the 2015/16 season, initially on loan from Torino, despite first appearing in the 2006/ 07.
The forward left the team after relegation to Serie B last season, playing his last game in Naples, his home city, and in front of fans who gave him a loud ovation after also being a Neapolitan player in 2009 and 2010.
During his career, he won three championships and two Italian Super Cups, all with Juventus, whose colors he wore from 2010/11 to 2013/14, in four seasons.
In a career that included spells for Fiorentina, Chieti, Torino, Ascoli, Udinese and the Italian national team, as well as 28 caps, the forward leaves with 242 goals scored.
