The mayor of Lisbon this Monday considered the metro delays to be the “biggest obstacle to traffic” in the city and threatened to demand a suspension of work if the work schedule was not met.
“The constant delays in the metro are the biggest obstacle to movement in Lisbon. Lisbon residents do not accept these delays as they are perceived as normal. As President of the Chamber, I demand that there is a community plan that is implemented as a matter of urgency. Otherwise, I will have to demand that the government immediately stop work in certain areas of the city,” Carlos Moedas said in an interview with Lusa.
In an interview with TSF and Dinheiro Vivo on Saturday, the president of the Metropolitano de Lisbon, Vítor Domínguez do Santos, said that the city will face new restrictions due to expansion work, especially in the coastal area, near Cais do Sodré, and that Alcántara is temporarily The closure of Avenida 24 de Julio will be extended.
The official acknowledged that the restrictions will have consequences for CP and Carris customers, but that this is a “cost of progress.”
“These delays show once again how important it is that the Lisbon metro is run by the Lisbon city council and not by the government,” reiterated the PSD mayor, who governs the city without an absolute majority.
On September 29, Carlos Moedas said that the capital’s metro “must be run” by local authorities, similar to what is happening with Carris, since “mobility should always be considered as a whole” to be able to provide a “greater response” to people.
Answering Lusa’s question on the sidelines of the meeting “Comunidades em Ação – Urban Integrated Operations” that took place at the Lisbon Forum, the mayor explained the position on the Lisbon metro that he outlined in an interview with TSF and DN published like this: day.
Serlos Moedas has already asked the government to have “at least one administrator” at Metro, a request “that has not been responded to” by Prime Minister António Costa.
“There was no difference in my thinking,” he said when Lusa asked him about moving from being an “administrator” to being a “100% shareholder” of Metro.
“If there is no response from the government to having an administrator, I think I have to fight for a solution, and this solution makes sense. How do we have a subway that is nationally controlled but that operates in my territory? residents of Lisbon on our territory?” he asks, remembering: “This is the Lisbon metro.”
This change in the management of the Lisbon metro is “a matter of strategy” and should therefore be “discussed with the government,” the Social Democratic mayor noted at the time.
The new Metropolitano de Lisbon ring line, which will connect Rato station with Cais do Sodre, extending the network by a further two kilometers, will create a ring in the center of Lisbon and interfaces that will connect and integrate several modes of transport. transport.
The Lisbon Metro operates daily on four lines: yellow (Rato – Odivelas), green (Telheiras – Cais do Sodre), blue (Reboleira – Santa Apolonia) and red (airport – São Sebastian).
Usually the metro operates from 06:30 to 01:00.
