France international Benjamin Mendy (ex-Manchester City), acquitted of rape and attempted rape charges, will take legal action to try to recover millions of euros in unpaid wages, British media reported on Monday.
The left-back, who has been with French Ligue 1 club Lorient since the start of the season, was suspended by Manchester City after being charged and placed in preventive detention in the summer of 2021.
“Manchester City Football Club did not pay Mr Mendy any wages from September 2021, following Mr Mendy’s indictment on a number of charges of which he was subsequently acquitted, until the end of his contract in June 2023,” the press reports. The release was sent on behalf of the player to the Sky Sports channel and the daily newspaper The Guardian.
According to the document, “the complaint will be considered in the labor court,” and it is specified that the player’s interests will be defended by lawyer Nick De Marco from the Madrid law firm Laffer.
Mendy, 29, was acquitted by English courts in two stages, in January and then in June, of charges of rape, attempted rape and sexual assault.
The two consecutive acquittals ended all proceedings brought by British courts against the 2018 World Cup champion France, with the player always contesting the charges on contractual grounds.
It is estimated that Manchester City, the reigning Premier League champions, paid the French striker around £100,000 a week (around €114,000).
Trained in Le Havre, featured in Marseille and spent a season in Monaco, Mendy became the most expensive defender in history in 2017 when City, who feature Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias, paid £52 million (around €61.4 million). at current prices) to guarantee your services.
