Mariana Mortagua promises BE will be the force Portugal needs after the “deep scars” left by the PS.

The coordinator of the Bloc de Esquerda (BE), Mariana Mortagua, criticized the government of the absolute majority of the Socialist Party (PS) and assured that it is focused on achieving the best results in the elections, in order to be able to secure a future and hope that cannot be seen today in Portugal.

In an interview with CMTV, The blocker called the housing crisis one of the biggest “scars” that the PS has left in the country. Asked about the possibility of creating a coalition similar to Geringonza’s, she said she preferred not to comment on scenarios.

“I do not think that the electoral weakness of the Socialist Party is connected only with the circumstances in which the resignation of the prime minister took place. It is associated with social degradation and a lack of prospects for change,” notes Mortagua.

Regarding the internal elections in the PS, Mariana Mortagua still looks at the situation from a limited point of view. “Both Pedro Nuno Santos and José Luis Carneiro were ministers of a government with an absolute majority that left deep scars in the country (…) In the last two years we have seen the PS do what it wanted with its absolute majority,” he repeated.

According to the BE coordinator, the left must bring the changes and measures that the country needs, especially regarding social issues. The housing crisis, the National Health Service and stagnant wages are issues Mortagua promises to tackle vigorously on the campaign trail. “The left must have the strength to save SNS and salaries in the country,” he emphasizes.

Faced with the rise of far-right forces in Portugal, the blockade participant assured that she would never be able to make the right-wing party viable. “The right-wing agenda is the opposite of what BE believes in,” he explained, declining to comment on the possibility of Chegi’s electoral advantage.

“What is important in these legislative elections is that the Bloc achieved the best result and did not allow the right-wing party to win,” he said.
