After weeks of well-above-average temperatures, the Portuguese mainland will experience highs and lows typical of November from this Tuesday due to the mass of polar air, according to meteorologist Maria João Frada.
Speaking to Lusa, a meteorologist from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) noted that temperatures today will drop significantly – by about 3-5/6 degrees, or up to 7 degrees in some places on the continent, compared to before Monday’s fair.
“Despite the drop, temperatures are within the average for this time of year. Something that was well above average until November 19th. Highs for today are expected to be between 13 and 14/15 degrees and lows between 1 and 5 degrees. in the interior areas – 0 degrees, in the most protected places, in the rest of the territory – from 6 to 12 degrees,” he said.
According to Maria João Frada, this drop in temperature is due to the northerly flow, which transports a mass of polar air as part of the circulation of a relatively intense anticyclone located to the west/southwest of the British Isles.
“This mass, in addition to being colder and responsible for lowering the temperature, also brings accompanying wind. Although the temperature is within the average for the season, the wind gives a feeling of cold,” he said.
Temperatures are expected to drop further by 2-3 degrees on Wednesday, with less wind and cold nights, according to an IPMA meteorologist.
“The cold weather will continue over the next few days, with no precipitation expected until at least the weekend,” he said.
