Heat causes 70,000 deaths in Europe in 2022

A study published Tuesday by the Barcelona Institute of Global Health (ISGlobal) shows that around 70,000 people could die across Europe in 2022 due to extreme heat.

In a statement, ISGlobal explained that the investigation, published in The Lancet Regional Health-Europe, is revising upward the current estimates of mortality associated with record temperatures recorded last summer on the European continent.

The authors acknowledge that in the study, previously published in Nature Medicine, the methodology used, based on average weekly temperatures, underestimated heat-related mortality because daily data is needed to accurately estimate the impact of extreme temperature peaks.
