Angel Di Maria, an Argentine player, spat at Brazilian fans before Argentina’s victory over the Canaries on Tuesday.
South America’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match started about 30 minutes later than scheduled due to disrespect in the stands at the Maracana Stadium. The police attacked the fans, and players from both teams had to return to the locker rooms.
At that moment, Brazilian fans doused the Benfica striker with liquid, presumably water or beer. The Argentine didn’t like this and responded by spitting in the direction of the Canarian fans.
Argentina won 1-0 thanks to a goal from another Benfica player, defender Nicolas Otamendi. The world champions took an early lead in qualifying as Brazil recorded a third defeat in a row to remain in sixth place.
