Army bets on innovation to make technological leaps

An exoskeleton that turns a soldier into a “Superman” capable of carrying hundreds of kilograms single-handedly, a weapon that can hunt drones and force them to land without touching them, or a simulated combat training system that, through electrical stimulation, gives soldiers the feeling of being shot. These are just three examples of projects being developed by the Portuguese Army as part of the Technology Innovation and Modernization Strategy. And all this in partnership with Portuguese companies and universities, a collaboration that is already bearing fruit for both parties.

“In the context of growing conflict on a global scale, whether due to the war in Ukraine or the recent crisis in the Middle East, innovation and technological modernization are fundamental. This is also another way to expand cooperation with the national business structure, from which new project opportunities may arise, which, in turn, will allow the development of this same business structure with clear benefits for the national economy,” said the head of the General Staff of the Army, General Mendez Ferran, at the end of the event in Oeiras, certified four projects that are already in production thanks to this initiative, in this case clothing with NBQR (nuclear, biological, chemical and radiological) protection and ballistic protection.
