This Sunday, Syria accused Israel of a new missile attack on Damascus International Airport and the repeated disabling of facilities, which became the second action of the Jewish state against the country.
The official Syrian news agency SANA, citing the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH), said that Damascus airport was again targeted by Israeli airstrikes this Sunday afternoon and stopped operating hours after flights resumed following a similar attack last month. .
“This Sunday afternoon, the Israeli Air Force carried out a new attack on Damascus International Airport (…), putting it out of action again,” the observatory reported.
The same source said the attack targeted airstrips and also reported the sound of explosions coming from a military airport located in another sector of the Syrian capital.
According to French news agency AFP, two airlines said flights from Damascus airport resumed this Sunday. The news had already been published in the local press before the authorities officially announced the attacks.
A military source said in a statement published by the official Sana news agency that at around 16:50 (1350 GMT), “the Zionist enemy carried out an aerial missile attack from the occupied Syrian Golan Heights. “.
According to the agency, the attack targeted “Damascus International Airport and some locations in the Damascus area,” resulting in the airport being disabled and causing “material damage.”
Air defenses “destroyed” most of the missiles, but the airport was still damaged, the statement said.
Since the country’s civil war began in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in neighboring Syria, targeting positions of the Syrian army and Iranian-linked groups such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
These attacks have become more frequent since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, following the Islamic movement’s bloody attack on Israeli soil on November 7.
Attacks on Damascus and Aleppo (north) airports on October 12 and 22 crippled both infrastructures.
Following the October 22 attacks, flights were diverted to Latakia Airport on the west coast.
Israel rarely comments on its attacks in Syria, but this Sunday it said it wants to prevent Iran, its archenemy, from gaining a foothold near its territory.
