The Council of Arbitration (CA) of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) received 215 applications to referee football and futsal in the first five days of the campaign “It’s part of the game, come and referee”, the organization announced this Monday.
“I cannot stress enough the importance of the campaign being mentioned on social media and supported by all professional football clubs, class and district associations and referee groups,” said the FPF SA President.
José Fontelas Gómez recalled that refereeing “is fundamental to the development of football and futsal, and the ability to recruit and retain referees is a critical task and can only be achieved through the joint action of everyone involved in the sport.”
According to the FPF CA, 215 applications have been received since Thursday from almost the entire country, in particular from Lisbon, Porto, Braga and Setúbal, comparable, for example, to the nine registered in October.
On Thursday, the FPF launched a recruitment campaign for football, futsal and beach soccer referees, estimating that there is a shortage of around 1,000 referees in the units overseen by the FPF.
