The Maritime Police will become the first criminal police agency in Portugal to receive “body cameras”, with a handover ceremony for the handheld cameras taking place on Tuesday, the National Maritime Authority (AMN) said on Monday.
The ANM report said that in addition to “body cameras” (portable cameras for individual use), NCIS will also be equipped with “tasers” (non-lethal weapons).
“The provision of body cameras and stun guns will allow NCIS to use less violent methods of deterrence while more effectively protecting the physical integrity of officers and citizens. The acquisition of this material represents an investment in the modernization of the maritime police necessary to combat various missions,” explains ANM.
The National Maritime Authority also emphasizes that the Marine Police is the first criminal police agency in Portugal to acquire “body cameras” even before the PSP and GNR, and the Minister of Internal Administration José Luis Carneiro announced in April the delivery, in November, of the first 2,500 cameras for these police forces.
However, problems in the tender for the purchase of a platform that will manage and store information collected by PSP and GNR “body cameras” are delaying the delivery of handheld cameras for personal use, and it is unknown when this will happen.
