Four-year-old Ayla Mota lost her legs and five fingers after a severe infection with streptococcus A. In March this year, the girl was rushed to hospital in London after complaining of a sore throat, but her health deteriorated sharply.
Eulanda, Ayla’s mother, said Mirror who realized her daughter was still unwell after she began having difficulty going to the toilet and breathing. Despite initially being discharged, the woman decided to take the girl back to the hospital for further examination. It turned out that the girl had multiple organ failure, including lungs and kidneys.
The decision was made to transfer Ayla to another hospital to remove fluid from her lungs. Later the girl was placed in intensive care.
“The doctors kept saying that she would have to be put into a medically induced coma. I asked, “Will she wake up if we do this?” – and they said yes. I went to the waiting room, I have no idea how long, and when I returned, Ayla was connected to all sorts of machines,” says the mother.
Ayla was in a medically induced coma for three weeks, and after waking up she could not move her legs or five fingers, so the decision was made to amputate them.
“I couldn’t stop thinking about her future, how it would affect her physically and mentally. I was told that the circulation to her legs and arms had been cut off to save her vital organs. The most important thing was to save her life,” says the mother.
The girl is currently undergoing intensive physical therapy and occupational therapy with prosthetics.
“Ayla attends rehab, occupational therapy and even goes to regular school full time. She loves gymnastics, horse riding, skating and bowling. We do everything we can for her. Sepsis and streptococcus A did not deprive her of love. life,” concludes Julanda.
