Prime Minister Antonio Costa will attend a dinner in Paris on Tuesday with five other European Union (EU) leaders to discuss the community’s next institutional cycle after the 2024 European elections, hosted by European Council President Charles Michel.
António Costa will take part in the second dinner debate, hosted by Charles Michel, on the EU’s political priorities for the future, in the context of the European Parliament elections in June 2024 and until the appointment of the next European Commission, after the European Commission. The official said that last week consultations began with the heads of government and states of the Union on a new strategic program.
The event takes place at the Elysee Palace in Paris and is organized by the President of France.
In addition to António Costa, the event will include leaders such as host French President Emmanuel Macron, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, new Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and newly elected Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden. ., as well as the resigned Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte.
The first dinner dedicated to the new EU strategic program took place last Monday in Berlin with the participation of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who promoted the event, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, as well as the prime ministers of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Hungary, Viktor Orban, Belgium – Alexander De Kroo, the presidents of Cyprus – Nikos Christodoulides and Lithuania – Gitanas Nausėda.
These two will be followed in the coming weeks by dinners in Copenhagen and Zagreb with the remaining European leaders.
Issues on the table include the reforms that need to be carried out in the EU in the context of future enlargement, strengthening the community budget taking into account common priorities, as well as improving decision-making. voting by qualified majority instead of unanimity.
This comes two weeks before a crucial European Council meeting in December, at which EU leaders will try to reach agreements on issues such as the start of formal accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, a review of the multi-year budget until 2027 (with a financial reserve to support Ukraine’s 50 billion euros), a new pact on migration and asylum, and new community budget rules.
