An earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale occurred near Melgasu.

An earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale was felt near Melgaço in the Viana do Castelo region on Tuesday without causing any personal or property damage, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The IPMA statement said that the epicenter of the earthquake was located about ten kilometers east of Melgaso and was recorded at 5:14 a.m. at stations of the Continente seismic network.

This shock was felt with maximum intensity III (modified Mercalli scale) in the municipality of Amares, Braga district.

The earthquake was also felt with less intensity in the municipality of Esposende, as well as in the district of Braga.

By magnitude, earthquakes are classified into micro (less than 2.0), very small (2.0-2.9), small (3.0-3.9), weak (4.0-4.9), moderate (5 ,0-5.9), strong (6.0-6.9). , excellent (7.0–7.9), important (8.0–8.9), exceptional (9.0–9.9) and extreme (more than 10).

Level III on the Mercalli scale means low intensity.

According to the IPMA definition for this XII level scale, at level III, the swaying of hanging objects can be felt inside the house, vibration similar to that caused by the passage of heavy vehicles, and the duration can be estimated, but cannot be recognized as an earthquake.
