Owen Farrell will not feature in the 2024 Six Nations as the England captain takes a break from international rugby to focus on the mental well-being of himself and his family.
The 32-year-old will continue to play for the Saracens captain, who announced his decision with the England squad on Wednesday.
“Everyone at England Rugby fully supports Owen’s decision,” England head coach Steve Borthwick said.
“He has been an integral part of the England team for over a decade since his debut and the demands placed on elite athletes are extremely high. He is an exemplary player, captain and leader and always gives his all for his country.
“With typical courage, Owen made the decision to open up in this way. “Along with all of us at England Rugby, I will do everything I can to ensure he has the support he needs going forward.”
Farrell, 32, made his England debut in 2012 and was officially named captain in 2019 after replacing Dylan Hartley.
The midfielder made his 100e Competing in the Nation Autumn Series last year and recently leading England to the World Cup.
His position in the starting XI was in doubt before the tournament, but Borthwick kept the faith and reinstated Farrell when he returned from suspension.
Courtney Lawes captained England in his absence, but with the striker announcing his retirement after the World Cup, Ellis Genge could be a leading candidate for the Six Nations role.
Genge, who returned to Bristol Bears last year after leading Leicester Tigers to the Premier League title, was England vice-captain under Borthwick and former head coach Eddie Jones.
