The VAR official involved in Paris Saint-Germain’s controversial penalty against Newcastle United has been suspended.
It is understood that Tomasz Kwiatkowski will no longer be part of the refereeing team for Real Sociedad’s Champions League match against Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday night.
Newcastle were denied a famous win at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday before Kwiatkowski intervened with a brutal handball from Tino Livramento.
Kylian Mbappe converted a 98th-minute penalty, leaving Newcastle needing a win in their final group game against Milan on 13 December.
In response to feelings of injustice in Paris, Kieran Trippier called on officials to make statements to the media.
“This is one of those moments where I stand here and discuss decisions, but why can’t the officials do it?” – he asked.
“Why can’t the referee come out and explain why he awarded this penalty, just to give all the fans, the media and you a clearer idea of why he awarded the penalty?
“The players are stuck here answering questions, but why can’t the officials do it? It’s not talked about enough.”
Trippier said Newcastle’s players tried to explain to referee Szymon Marciniak why he awarded the penalty in stoppage time but received no explanation. He then proposed a more radical solution to the problem.
