12th-century Italian tower closed due to risk of collapse

The Garisenda Tower in Bologna, Italy, was closed due to the risk of collapse. Authorities are building a five-metre barrier to contain the debris at an estimated cost of 4.3 million euros.

The 12th-century tower is 47 meters high and inclined at an angle of four degrees. However, no changes in the direction of the slope were detected, the publication reports. BBC.

The site was closed for the first time in October after sensors detected changes in Garisenda’s slope and inspections revealed deterioration in the materials that make up the foundation.

According to the city’s municipal council, the situation is now “extremely critical” and a defense plan has been launched to preserve the tower and protect civilians.
