Heavy snowfall this Saturday caused chaos in southern Germany’s Bavaria, especially in its capital Munich, where air and rail services were disrupted.
After announcing the suspension of flights until 12:00 (local time), Munich Airport announced it would extend the measure until 6:00 (5:00 Lisbon time) on Sunday “due to ongoing snowfall,” an airport spokesman said. AFP adds that “a total of 760 flights were affected.”
More than 40 centimeters of snow fell in Munich on Friday evening, according to the weather service.
Authorities urged residents to stay home for safety reasons.
City police advised people to “avoid unnecessary travel and travel only when necessary” due to the “exceptionally heavy snowfall.”
The arrival of winter has also caused significant disruption to rail services: “Munich’s main train station is out of service,” German transport company Deutsche Bahn said.
Traffic on the main highways of the city is completely paralyzed.
Train cancellations or delays are also expected in southern Germany, Deutsche Bahn warned, expecting the disruption to last throughout the day.
Most public transport – buses, commuter trains and trams – have also been stopped in the Bavarian capital, according to the Munich public transport company (MVG).

Another consequence of the bad weather was the postponement of the game between Bayern Munich and Union Berlin of the 13th round of the German championship, scheduled for this Saturday at 15:30 local time.
Snow on the roof of the Allianz Arena “poses an incalculable risk for spectators. Moreover, it is almost impossible to get to the Allianz Arena,” Bayern Munich said in a statement.
Police in Lower Bavaria recorded around 350 interventions related to bad weather from Friday evening to this morning. Five traffic accidents with minor injuries were recorded.
Much of Germany has been under the influence of snow and sub-zero temperatures for several days.
According to the German weather service, the heaviest amount of snow is expected this Saturday in Allgäu, in southern Bavaria, with between 30 and 40 centimeters.
Rainfall is expected to gradually decrease until late tonight, according to the weather service.
