Public transport in Paris is in alarming decline eight months before the Olympics

Île-de-France Mobilités (ÎdFM), the body coordinating public transport in the Paris region, warned on Tuesday of an “alarming” deterioration in service on many lines, with almost half of metro routes affected, eight months into Paris 2024.

233 days before the start of the Olympic Games, scheduled for July 26 to August 11, ÎdFM published an assessment based on commuter train and metro punctuality data in October that shows “an alarming new degradation of transport services.” following improvements made last spring.

In a statement, the government body in charge of transport in the French capital said there was a “situation of degradation that persists” regarding the metro, with only four of the 14 lines performing better than or equal to their target. goals, and four more approach them, but do not achieve them.

ÎdFM considers the remaining six lines to be “struggling”, which is particularly serious in the case of five of them, as the metro’s punctuality rate is less than 85%, which “did not exist before Covid-19”.

An analysis of regularity problems “shows that, despite mass hiring, driver unavailability (absenteeism, illness, etc.) is the main reason for service cancellations,” amounting to almost 50% in some areas.

Regarding commuter trains, the department indicated that there are problems on five lines, although in two cases they are cyclical, and in eight they are close to the assigned tasks.

This negative assessment comes as Parisian transport comes under global scrutiny after it was announced that ticket prices will double next summer: for example, a weekly ticket for the Paris region will rise from 30 to 70 euros, and individual travel in metro and bus prices will rise from 2.10 to four euros.

The issue of transport, along with safety, is a major concern for the organizers of Paris 2024: the mayor of the French capital, Anne Hidalgo, two weeks ago admitted that public transport in Paris would not be prepared for the Olympic Games, causing an insufficient number and frequency of trains in some localities.

However, last week the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said it had received assurances from French authorities over transport for Paris 2024, with that country’s government also rejecting Hidalgo’s allegations.
