The GNR confiscated 1,524 kilograms of Japanese shellfish worth €13,716 during an inspection in the Grand Port on Monday, police said this Thursday.
In a statement, GNR explained that the seizure occurred as part of an inspection aimed at transporting fresh fish and bivalves.
The action was carried out by the Coastal and Border Control Unit (UCCF) through the Matosinhos Coastal Control Unit.
The military inspected a truck carrying Japanese shellfish “with documentation that did not match the product and did not establish its origin and traceability, which could pose a risk to public health,” GNR describes.
This is a violation punishable by a fine of up to 1,500 euros.
The GNR added that the seized Japanese shellfish, with an estimated value of €13,716, was sent for destruction as it was unfit for human consumption after the product passed a sanitary inspection by a veterinarian of the General Directorate of Food and Veterinary Medicine (DFAV).
A 36-year-old man was also identified as part of the action.
In the note, the GNR reminds that “the capture, storage and shipment of this type of bivalves without cleaning or hygienic controls may jeopardize public health.”
