The competition for the creation or retraining of more than 12 thousand places in kindergartens was opened by the government this Thursday with a budgetary allocation of almost 50 million euros, the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security (MTSSS) announced.
According to the ministry, the competition will last until January 31, 2024 and is aimed at private social solidarity institutions (PSIs) or similar institutions, local authorities and other public organizations, as well as non-profit private law organizations for public purposes.
The competition is part of the Plan for Recovery and Resilience (PRR) and has a budget allocation of €48.4 million for the “creation and retraining of over 12 thousand nursery places, with a focus on transforming existing premises.” .
The goal is to retrain and expand the network of equipment and social measures “with the aim of maintaining an increase in the capacity of kindergartens.”
Minister Ana Méndez Godinho announced on November 14 during a hearing of the Budget and Finance and Labor, Social Security and Integration committees to discuss the specifics of the next state budget, which will be a new notification in November. was opened to create an additional 12 thousand places in kindergartens.
These places will join those available under the Happy Kindergarten measure, which has 85,000 free places, nine thousand of which were created between July and September thanks to the resolution to increase response capacity, according to the latest count made by in September.
When the agreement between the government and the social assistance and solidarity sector was signed in July 2022 to formalize the measure, the Prime Minister estimated that free kindergartens would reach 100,000 children by 2024.
It was revealed that free childcare in kindergartens is being implemented in stages, and the current government budget forecasts that 120,000 children will receive a free place, including children born after 1 September 2021 and children from lower income families.
