The North American Football Federation has launched an investigation into allegations of domestic violence made by coach Gregg Berhalter and said Anthony Hudson will temporarily manage selection for friendlies scheduled for this month.
On Tuesday, Berhalter released a statement revealing that in 1991 he had an argument with his fiancée — his current wife — that ended with the trainer “kicking him in the leg,” an act he called “disgraceful.” “no excuses.”
This became known to the North American Federation, and they decided to initiate an investigation into the behavior of 49-year-old Berhalter, whose contract expired after the 2022 World Cup, in which the United States was eliminated in the 1/8 finals, losing 3 matches. -1 to the Netherlands.
“During this process, US Soccer became aware of possible inappropriate behavior towards some members of our team of people outside of our bodies,” the North American Federation said.
The choice of a coach, which could include Berhalter’s succession, takes on additional significance as the United States is one of three countries hosting the 2026 World Cup, along with Canada and Mexico, the largest ever with up to 48 participating teams.
Until federation officials decide on a coach to take Team USA to the World Tournament, Hudson will take over on a temporary basis, starting with friendlies against Serbia and Colombia in Los Angeles.
