Greek Football League games will be played behind closed doors until February 12 to try to control the violence plaguing the country’s sport, the Greek government announced today.
“All league matches will be played behind closed doors for the next two months, that is until February 12,” government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said at a time when several violent incidents occurred at several national competitions.
The latest incident occurred on Thursday during a volleyball match between Panathinaikos and Olympiacos, which resulted in about 400 people being detained and a police officer seriously injured.
Due to the current situation, the Greek Football League games scheduled for last weekend have been postponed to a date yet to be determined.
The postponement was announced on Friday by Greek league organizers after referees decided to go on strike earlier in the week to ensure safety conditions.
