Spaniard Jon Rahm has been suspended from the North American Golf Tour due to his ties to the LIV, a professional tournament that opens in 2022 in Saudi Arabia, the PGA Tour announced Tuesday.
“Per regulations, Jon Rahm has been disqualified and is ineligible to play on the PGA Tour due to his involvement in a series of unauthorized tournaments,” the organization said in a statement.
The PGA Tour clarifies that points scored by Rahm, who won the Augusta Masters in April of this year, will not be counted in the 2022/2023 season.
Earlier this month, 29-year-old Jon Rahm agreed to join LIV Golf with a contract that according to press reports will be worth around 520 million euros.
The Basque golfer won four PGA Tour events last year in one of the best years of his short professional career, which began in 2016.
LIV Golf, funded by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, runs 12 tournaments. The new season starts in February in Mexico and will visit countries such as the USA, Spain and the UK.
