On Thursday morning, 11 activists from the group Climáximo blocked access to the Marqués de Pombal tunnel in central Lisbon. The PSP detained young protesters. Traffic on the Duarte Pacheco viaduct was blocked for an hour and a half.
Before authorities arrived, drivers and motorcyclists grabbed and dragged some of the youths onto the sidewalk. PSP removed the protesters from the scene.
Two activists hung from the Duarte Pacheco Viaduct holding a banner that read, “Governments and companies have declared war on society and the planet.” Firefighters took the young people away, and they were eventually detained by the police service.
In a statement, Climáximo stressed that the activists “interrupted one of the main highways leading into the city of Lisbon, where hundreds of thousands of cars enter every day, many of which have no accessible alternative to public transport.”
In October, a court fined three members of the movement €600 for violating road safety and blocking traffic on Rua de São Bento in Lisbon.
