Thailand’s first Olympic champion is suspected of attempting to rape a young woman

Former boxer Somlak Kamsing, Thailand’s first Olympic champion, was questioned by police on Thursday on suspicion of four crimes, including attempted rape of a 17-year-old girl.

According to the Thai News Agency, Kamsing, a 1996 Olympic featherweight champion in Atlanta, gave an informal interview after a 17-year-old girl accused him of sexual assault on Saturday night at the hotel where they were staying after meeting at a bar. .

The head of the investigation, Suparek Suwanrach, explained that the lawyers of Shomlak Kamsing, who is considered a national hero in the country, now have 15 days to present the defense of the former boxer.

Somlak Kamsing, 50, is also suspected of separating the minor from her parents, kidnapping her and using force for sexual purposes.

The former athlete admitted that he maintained an intimate relationship with a young woman, unaware that she was underage, but denied all accusations and asked that “justice do its job.”
