Alex Batty disappeared aged 11 in southern Spain while on holiday with his mother and grandfather, who had also disappeared.
The minor told authorities he had been in France for two years. Alex was healthy and safe and was assured that he had not been mistreated.
In 2018, the young man’s grandmother told the BBC that she believed Alex’s family had taken him to a spiritual community in Morocco.
The family member, the child’s legal guardian, understood that the mother and grandfather wanted an alternative lifestyle and did not intend to take the child to school.
