A 58-year-old fisherman died early Friday morning after falling from a cliff in the Carrapateira area of Aljezur.
The alarm came from the victim’s friends on Thursday at 11:50 pm, who realized that the fisherman had not returned from fishing.
A search was immediately launched by Lagos Marine Police and Aljezur Volunteer Firefighters with the support of a drone, as well as members of the public present in the area. The search was called off at 2:30 a.m. but nothing was found.
The search resumed on Friday morning with the participation of the vessel Salva Vidas de Sagres.
The fisherman’s body was discovered at 7:30 a.m. in an inaccessible area, which was confirmed by a drone from Aljezur volunteer firefighters.
The victim was pulled from the high tide zone and then taken by a lifeguard to the pier of the Sagres life-saving station, where he was pronounced dead by a health delegate.
The body was taken to the Portimão forensic service for an autopsy.
The NCIS Psychological Unit was activated and provided support to the victim’s family.
