Pedro Nuno wants to open a “new cycle” in the PS and believes that he is not “the leader that the right liked.”

The new PS general secretary said this Sunday that he wants to start “a new phase, a new cycle” with a project of “continuity but above all change” and believes that this is not the case.” a leader who the right liked it.”

Pedro Nuno Santos spoke to reporters at the Socialist Party’s national headquarters in Lisbon, where he had a 90-minute meeting with his predecessor in the Socialist leadership and still Prime Minister Antonio Costa.

When asked on Saturday evening about criticism from the PSD regarding his first performance as PS secretary general, Pedro Nuno Santos replied: “I am not the candidate the right would like me to be. I am not the leader of the PS that the right would like to have.”

“We will carry out a great fight against these right-wingers and the PSD to win the elections on March 10th. I am not going to comment on my speech because as you can imagine, I did not expect the speech that I gave or what I will say to ever or at any point be praised by the SDP,” he added.

According to Pedro Nuno Santos, “This is something that one would suspect, if the PSD leader or any other PSD leader actually praised it, it would really be a cause for concern.”

The newly elected Secretary General of the PS returned this Sunday to express his pride in the work of the government under António Costa over the past eight years, declaring that he wants to “continue and not only complete the many projects initiated by the current government”, but giving “the beginning of a new phase , a new cycle,” and repeated the idea that he wants to lead the project “with new impetus, with new energy.”

“This is a project about continuity, but above all about change aimed at solving the problems that still persist in our country,” he further defined.

As throughout the internal PS campaign, Pedro Nuno Santos emphasized that not all is well, that there are problems that need to be solved. Once again rejecting the division between radicals and moderates, he stated: “Radical are indeed some of the problems that we still suffer from in our country and that require an answer, yes.”

The new PS general secretary was elected with 62% of the vote in direct elections held from Friday to Saturday, in which he competed with José Luis Carneiro, who came second with 36%, and Daniel Adrian, who had 1% of the vote.
