This Thursday, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled in favor of the European Super League in a dispute that has been ongoing with UEFA and FIFA since it was started by some of the continent’s biggest clubs in April 2021. In a statement issued this morning, the EU accuses UEFA and FIFA of “abusing dominant power.”
“FIFA and UEFA rules which require the prior approval of any new club football competition such as the Super League, and which prohibit clubs and players from participating in those same competitions on pain of sanctions, are illegal. This is due to the fact that the powers of FIFA and UEFA are not subject to any criteria guaranteeing their transparent, objective, non-discriminatory and proportionate nature. The rules giving FIFA and UEFA exclusive control over the commercial exploitation of derivative rights to these competitions, may limit competence. “, taking into account the importance that the latter have for the media, consumers and viewers,” the document says.
What is the Super League?
This is a new European tournament whose format was announced on April 18, 2021. It is a closed tournament parallel to existing competitions such as the Champions League and Europa League.
The idea was that games would be played throughout the week and all clubs would continue to compete in their respective championships, thus maintaining the traditional calendar. The season will begin in August with clubs split into two groups of ten where they will play back-and-forth matches; The top three in each group automatically advance to the quarterfinals. The fourth and fifth place teams will compete in a two-game playoff. There will then be two-leg knockouts from the quarters to the final, which will be a singles match at the end of May at a neutral venue.
The competition was founded by 12 clubs (Milan, Arsenal, Atlético Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham), which will be joined by three more. In addition to these 15, a further five clubs will enter the competition each year based on their performance in the previous season, thus completing the group of 20.
Florentino Perez, the president of Real Madrid, mentored the project and had the support of people like Andrea Agnelli, the former leader of Juventus.
