FIFA will analyze the court’s decision, but will protect sporting merits

FIFA announced this Thursday that, together with UEFA and other members, it will review the decision of the European judicial system, which found its intervention in the football Super League offensive, bearing in mind the importance of sporting merit.

However, FIFA maintains that football owes its “long and successful history” to the principles of competitive balance and financial solidarity, and remembers the sport’s “hierarchical structure supported by sporting merit.”

“FIFA, its confederations and member associations will continue to protect the interests of all football fans around the world in the future,” the organization further states.

The EU’s top administrative body found this Thursday that UEFA and FIFA abused their “dominant position” in their actions against the creation of the controversial Super League football.

This decision is not subject to appeal and must be applied by the Spanish court hearing the case in response to a complaint filed in April 2022 by the companies managing the sports project, A22 Sports Management and the European Super League.

However, this Thursday UEFA rejected the claim that the CJEU decision confirms the creation of a football Super League, admitting that it points to gaps in competition authorizations.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are rivals among the 15 founders of the original project (although only 12 have been revealed), which included a 20-club competition that has been contested by a range of quarters, from sporting bodies to national governments, including the fans themselves.

In October 2022, A22 was created to promote the project, which in February 2023 re-adapted the original plan to new principles and a model of 60–80 clubs that was open, without permanent members and based on sporting merit.
