The famous song “Last Christmas” by the British duo Wham! During Christmas week it reached number one on the UK’s Official Hit List, 39 years after its release in 1984.
Sam Ryder’s Christmas classic “You’re Christmas To Me” came in at No. 2, while Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” was announced Friday by the Official Charts Company, an organization that compiles industry data.
It was followed by Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season”, Ed Sheeran and Elton John’s “Merry Christmas” and The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl’s “Fairytale of New York” following the death on 30 November of the Anglo-Irish band’s lead singer Shane MacGowan.
Despite its massive popularity, the song, written by the late George Michael and performed with his friend Andrew Ridgeley, reached number one for the first time during Christmas week, having already been at number one in January 2021.
According to The Official Charts Company, this is due to the fact that in the year of release the song was overtaken by Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas”, which raised funds to fight famine in Ethiopia.
After the achievement was revealed, Ridgeley said it was “wonderful” it had reached number one and stated that Michael, who died on Christmas Day in 2016, had always wanted the song to be at the top of the Christmas list.
“He felt that any great songwriter should be able to write a Christmas hit. Unfortunately, it’s too late for George, but he would be absolutely delighted” with this.
The number one album this Christmas will be Hackney Diamonds, the latest work from the Rolling Stones.
