The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) this Sunday issued an orange warning for the areas of Bragança and Guarda due to persistent fog with ice formation, which will remain in effect until Wednesday.
Bragança and Guarda have been under an orange warning for persistent fog since 00:52 this Sunday, the level of which will remain until 00:00 on December 27, the IPMA said in a statement.
Vila Real and Viseu will be under a yellow warning during the same period due to the forecast of persistent fog and cold weather with low temperatures remaining, especially in areas where fog persists.
Yellow warnings for cold weather are also in effect in Braganca and Guarda until Wednesday.
According to the latest IPMA information, there will be periods of very cloudy weather across mainland Portugal this Sunday, with some cloudiness to clear skies in the southern region from late morning.
In its statement, the institute suggested that the northern and central regions could experience light and scattered showers in the afternoon, as well as a slight drop in temperatures, with a noticeable drop in temperature overnight.
According to IPMA, the weather over the Christmas period will be influenced by an anticyclone located northeast of the Azores and extending to the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula.
Nights will be cold, with minimum temperatures above 5 degrees Celsius (ºC) only along the coastal strip and conditions for ice and frost formation, especially in the northern and central parts of the country, where minimum temperatures are expected to range from -4 to 0 °C.
Maximum temperatures should generally be between 10°C and 20°C, with the highest values along the coast of the Central and Southern Regions, especially the Algarve, being below 10°C in the interior of the Northern and Southern Regions. Central regions.
In areas where cloudiness or fog persists, temperatures should remain below 5°C.
The institute also warns of the need to exercise caution regarding road safety, especially at night and in the morning, which is likely to be affected by icy roads and fog.
