From January, the price of medicines will no longer be indicated on the packaging, and pharmacies are required to provide information on the invoice or receipt, according to a decree-law published on Tuesday in the Diário da República.
According to the document, the invoice or receipt issued must include information about the sale price to the public, the base price, if applicable, the percentage of government contribution and the costs borne by the government and the user.
The sales price to the public, as shown in drug presentations, “does not, as a rule, correspond to the cost of the drug for a citizen,” the decree-law says, explaining that this cost is influenced by “possible reimbursement” and partly depends on the “economic situation of the citizen,” especially in the case of pensioners, as well as from the application of a reference price system to medicines for which generics exist.
