The war in the Gaza Strip has devastated the enclave from north to south. There is “blood everywhere” in hospitals given the number of victims of the explosions.
Sean Casey, medical team coordinator at the World Health Organization (WHO), described the conditions under which some of the wounded are being transported to hospitals in Gaza. Images released showed injured patients and children lying on the floor.
“We saw children, women, young people, elderly men and women, people bleeding. Yesterday at the same time in Al-Aqsa I saw a woman with several gunshot wounds. There is blood everywhere in these hospitals. We’re seeing cases coming through the door on such a scale that it’s hard to believe, it’s a bloodbath, like we said, a bloodbath,” Sean Casey said, as quoted by Reuters.
Israeli activity intensified over Christmas, especially in the central region south of the seasonal waterway that crosses the Gaza Strip. The Israeli army ordered civilians to leave the area, although many said there was no safe place.
As Hamas killed 1,200 people and took 240 hostages in Israel on October 7, Israeli forces launched retaliatory attacks in the Gaza Strip and war was declared.
Palestinian health authorities have said Israeli attacks have killed some 21,000 people since the conflict began in the Gaza Strip.
The WHO medical team coordinator explained that healthcare capacity in Gaza is about 20% of what it was 80 days ago.
