A Benfica fan arrested on suspicion of stabbing another spectator during half-time of a Benfica-ABC match has been banned from entering stadiums and must report monthly to the police station where he lives. These are the coercive measures that the judge applied to the 42-year-old man this Saturday.
The arrest of the aforementioned fan took place last Thursday at his residence in the Qassem area. He is suspected of attacking another fan with a sharp weapon during a game on December 21, causing a “stomach piercing”. In a statement, the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP cited “futile reasons” related to the seats on the bench as the cause of the altercation. The suspect then fled, but on the same day PSP discovered the suspected murder weapon near the Estádio da Luz stadium.
It should also be remembered that this case led to the opening of a process by the Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Football Federation, which could have consequences for Benfica as the match organizer, who risk playing 2 games behind closed doors. In parallel, the Office for the Prevention and Combating of Violence in Sports should also open an administrative case regarding the incident.
