The first baby of the year in Lisbon was born at the Alfredo da Costa maternity hospital at 00:04 this Monday. She is a girl, weighs 3410 kilograms and her name is Ellie.
The parents, a Brazilian mother and Portuguese-Canadian father, say it was “a complete surprise” that the baby was born on that day, as the birth was supposed to take place on December 25, 2023, but this did not happen. .
On December 30, 2023, the mother was “experiencing severe pain and anxiety,” so the parents went to the hospital. “The doctors even considered sending her home, but they ended up admitting her” until this Monday, her daughter’s birthday.
On Ellie being named child of the year, the mother explains that it is “a unique feeling, I didn’t expect it, especially because I didn’t even know about the title of first child of the year here in Portugal. But she’s our little star, she’s perfect.”
This is the couple’s first child, and the parents shared the joy they felt upon learning the news.
“It was a surprise, but it was a long time coming for family and friends,” the mother said. “Everyone is very happy,” the father added.
