Kenyan police announced on Tuesday the preventive detention of two men suspected of killing athlete Benjamin Kiplagat, who was found dead on Saturday evening in his car near the city of Eldoret.
The two suspects, 25 and 30 years old, will be held in custody for 21 days by court order. Police describe them as “known criminals who have been terrorizing the population” in the Eldoret area.
According to police, the athlete, who was born in Kenya but has represented Uganda internationally, was traveling in a car when he was attacked by two men riding a motorcycle.
The Rift Valley city of Eldoret, also known as the Great Rift Valley, is highly sought after by long and middle distance athletes for training due to its high altitude environment.
The body of 34-year-old Kiplagat was found in a car on Saturday night with chest and neck injuries indicating the athlete had been stabbed.
Benjamim Kiplagat represented Uganda in the 3000m hurdles, competing at the Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics, as well as several World Championships.
