The highest authority in Portuguese and world football, Eusebio died ten years ago today. He has left a legacy and is part of the country’s history, and has contributed to the representation of Portugal in the world on a level much higher than just being a sporting entity.
It was the morning of January 5, 2004, when the news spread across the planet. At 4:30 a.m., Eusebio da Silva Ferreira died at the age of 71, a victim of cardiopulmonary arrest. He left a trail of glory behind him, traced by his achievements in the service of Benfica and the national team in the 60s and 70s.
Eusebio was born on January 25, 1942 in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), the capital of Mozambique. Eusebio moved to Benfica at the end of 1960, making his debut in 1961. With an eagle on his chest, he helped the club win its second European Championship. Cup and victory in eleven national championships. As a member of the national team, he shone at the 1966 World Championships (3rd place).
