Former Brazilian player and coach Mario Zagallo died on Friday at the age of 92, according to the former athlete’s official account on the social network Instagram.
“It is with great regret that we inform you of the passing of our eternal four-time world champion Mario Jorge Lobo Zagallo,” the condolence message reads.
Nicknamed “The Professor”, Zagallo played a fundamental role in four of the five world titles won by the Canarians.
As a player he won two trophies: in 1958 in Sweden and in 1962 in Chile. From the bench, he led the Brazilian team to the title in Mexico in 1970 and was technical coordinator when they won the title in 1994 in the United States.
He returned to the national team in 1998 when Ronaldo’s Brazil lost three goals to nil to captain Didier Deschamps’ Le Blais at the Stade de France.
Zagallo, immortalized in a statue in front of Rio de Janeiro’s Nilton Santos Stadium, captained Kuwait from 1976 to 1978 and the United Arab Emirates from 1989 to 1990.
