The re-elected president of the Social Democratic Party, Carlos Cesar, this Saturday accused Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of not doing what was “politically justified” by dissolving the government of António Costa.
“The prime minister did what was required of him institutionally, but the president of the republic did not do what was politically necessary,” he told the Socialist Congress. But that devalues: “What happens, happens,” he said. “We are not and have never been prisoners of circumstances,” he added.
The PS president began his speech by addressing the party’s current secretary general Pedro Nuno Santos, “the next prime minister of Portugal,” he said, followed by applause from congressmen. Carlos Cesar believes that the party’s election proposal is a winning one and is confident of victory in the legislative elections on March 10.
“PS is the best alternative. The PS has and represents the best Prime Minister in Portugal.”
In relation to the direct forces of the PS, he adhered to the thesis that “the Portuguese will not choose on March 10 those who will make themselves known only through the creators of chaos, or the coarseness of their language, or the conspiracies that they stage in the theater of politics – skills in which the PSD leadership often superior to his comrades on the right.”
On the contrary, according to Carlos Cesar, “the Portuguese need politicians who talk about what the Portuguese are really interested in.”
“And so that they not only say what they think, but also give guarantees to do what they say. Pedro Nuno Santos is such a politician: frontal and without fear of showing who he is – and this is what the country needs,” he noted . .
The former Socialist parliamentary leader also used experience managing the outgoing regional chief executive of the Azores to warn that if the right-wing party wins a majority after the next legislative elections, it will follow the same model in the country.
“If the right were to win the next national election, we would have a government playing a kingless, castling-less game, with every party, from the right to the far right, fighting for their share of power and wanting to know little more than how to make money from it.” , attacked.
In this context, the PS President described the change of government in the Azores in the February elections as “decisive, aimed at reversing the financial, economic and social degradation that has occurred there.”
“A PS victory on February 4 will be a victory for the lives of Azoreans. And in this sense, a victory for such a significant part of our country,” he said.
Regarding the future PS government led by Pedro Nuno Santos, he left a recommendation: “It is not possible to prioritize all sectors, that is true, but we must create some of them and manage them all well. As they say, I don’t leave for tomorrow what can be done in the near future,” he added.
The re-election took place a few minutes earlier
The former deputy spoke for the first time after being re-elected as chairman of the Socialist Party (PS) with 90.36% of the vote. The vote took place at the Socialist Congress at the Lisbon International Fair (FIL).
Carlos César, who headed the regional government of the Azores between 1996 and 2012 and was the parliamentary leader of the PS between 2015 and 2019, has been president of the PS since 2014.
