The Fifth Congress of Journalists will try to “find solutions” for the future of journalism in Portugal, and the event will also look at the current situation in Global Media, President Luse said.
The event will take place from 18 to 21 January at the São Jorge Cinema in Lisbon, while the pre-congress will take place from 15 to 17 January in the same premises, open to civil society.
“It is necessary to carry out before and after this congress”, journalism “has reached a state of exhaustion and after this period we can only be reborn”, so in addition to making a “diagnosis of the state” of the industry, we will – if we try to “together find solutions for the future of journalism in Portugal” , said Pedro Coelho.
This is “a discussion that we must have face to face, and based on the results of the congress, I believe that with all journalists, with different layers of journalism (it is a profession with very different generations, salaries, platforms and interests) we will try to find solutions for the future,” he emphasized.
And the solutions presuppose knowledge of “how to finance free journalism in a country with the characteristics of Portugal on the 50th anniversary of April 25,” he stressed.
The pre-congress that precedes the event will be “very focused on celebrating the 50th anniversary on April 25,” honoring journalists who worked during the dictatorship and who crossed the line between dictatorship and freedom.
There are three days for civil society where you can see an exhibition curated by Mario Cruz in honor of the photojournalists.
The Congress will begin at 18:00 on January 18 with several speeches, including that of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
“Following the situation at Global Media Group [GMG] we are going to do additionally – which was not provided for – with the testimony of members of the editorial boards of the bodies of “this group”, as well as other persons who the executive committee [do congresso] believes that they are in a vulnerable position,” said Pedro Coelho.
Access to the profession, instability, new frontiers of journalism, which include, among others, new technological approaches such as artificial intelligence, contactless journalism and journalism funding are some of the topics discussed at this congress.
“We will open each panel with testimony from dubious journalists,” said Pedro Coelho, a topic that “concerns Congress.”
The final day of the congress concludes with a panel discussion on new frontiers in journalism, with a closing session paying tribute to the journalists who died between 2017 and 2024, followed by a special tribute to Mario Mesquita and João Mesquita, former president of the congress. union
