The polar air mass caused temperatures to drop below normal for this season, temporarily replaced by another of marine origin, but the continental polar air mass will cause temperatures to fall further on Thursday, IPMA said this Monday.
According to a statement from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), “the weather on the Portuguese mainland was influenced by the polar air mass, resulting in temperatures slightly below normal for this time of year.”
Starting Monday afternoon, “this air mass will be temporarily replaced, mainly in the central and southern regions of the continent, by another, warmer maritime origin, carried by a depression centered in the west/northwest of the Iberian Peninsula,” which will cause “cloudiness and precipitation , as well as an increase in minimum temperature” on Tuesday, IPMA said.
According to the report, starting Wednesday afternoon, “a mass of continental polar air originating in the Scandinavian region will gradually invade the north of the Iberian Peninsula and then the south, leading to a further drop in temperatures, especially low temperatures.” ” on Thursday.
“So on the 11th, minimum temperatures are expected to range from -5 to 0°C in the north and central interior, from 1 to 5°C in the south and on the north and central coast and up to 8°C on the south coast.” , – the message says.
The IPMA added that on Friday “minimum temperatures are expected to fall further by between 2 and 4°C, meaning temperatures as low as -8°C could be reached in some places in the north-east of the country.” Trás os Montes and Beira Alta, and in some parts of the coast, especially in the north and center, temperatures approach 0°C.”
“As such, ice or frost is expected to form, particularly in the north and central interior where it will have a more significant impact on road traffic,” he said.
Forecasts for Thursday and Friday show that “maximum temperatures should range from 4 to 8°C in the north and central interior and 8 to 14°C in the southern interior and coast, with some areas expected to be below 4° C”. places in the northeast of Trás os Montes and Beira Alta, especially in the highlands.”
“For this reason, it is likely that a cold weather warning will be issued from the 11th for the areas of Bragança, Vila Real, Guarda and Viseu, which could eventually be extended to other areas,” the IPMA acknowledged, stressing that it has issued a yellow warning for snowfall in the mountains in the far north, above 600/800 metres, due to the impact it may have through accumulation, between late this Monday and early Tuesday morning.
The IPMA added that on Tuesday and Wednesday “rainfall is expected, generally light, with a chance of 70 to 100% over most of the area on the 9th and less than 70% in the northern regions and the center.” 10th place and less than 50% in the Southern region.”
“During these days, the precipitation that will fall in the far north will be in the form of snow above approximately 600/800 meters above sea level (rising per day to 1000/1200 meters), and in the remaining mountains – above 1400/1600 meters,” it says in the note.
The institute, however, stressed “that there is uncertainty about the location of precipitation, so a slight deviation would be enough to affect the snow forecast, and it is advisable to monitor forecasts and issue weather warnings in the coming days.”
