Ukrainian prosecutors specializing in crimes in armed conflict on Tuesday accused Russian armed forces of shooting dead some Ukrainian soldiers taken hostage in a war approaching its second anniversary.
In an interview with the British newspaper Telegraph, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Belousov referred to a video published last December in which Russian soldiers were shooting at Ukrainian prisoners.
“The video is not fake, our soldiers were shot. This is an example of a war crime committed by the occupiers, which, unfortunately, is quite common among Russians,” Belousov said, adding that Kiev has already managed to identify the victims.
The Ukrainian prosecutor’s office, he continued, is now collecting information on the total number of executions and torture of prisoners of war by the Russian armed forces.
“These are not rare cases, this is a system. […] Torture and ill-treatment are the most common crimes,” said the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, several documents and videos have emerged of alleged torture and execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian soldiers, although in some cases even Kyiv has been unable to confirm the facts. .
