The trial of former Caminha mayor Miguel Alves was postponed again on Wednesday. This was the fourth attempt. The trial was rescheduled for this Thursday, but a strike that court officials began in December and which delayed Wednesday’s hearing could push the start of the trial back to a new date.
Miguel Alves, accused of malfeasance as a political official, has already said he will talk to Coletivo. Manuela Souza, the owner of Mediana, who is accused in the case, is also expected to testify. It was quiet on Wednesday.
“I will make statements, but in the House of Justice, it is my duty and my responsibility,” said Miguel Alves, leaving the Viana do Castelo court, answering questions from journalists.
The former mayor of Caminha, who resigned as undersecretary of state to the prime minister after learning of the indictment, is suspected of favoring a company owned by businesswoman Manuela Souza, with whom he had a consulting contract for communications and promotion for the municipality of Caminha, without public procurement procedures.
According to the indictment, the deal between them was signed in July 2014. Until at least March 2015, the company of Manuela Souza, who at the time used the nickname Couto because she was married to the former mayor of Santo Tirso, Joaquim Couto, “without any contract procedure or legal and documentary support” provided services to the municipality ” with the knowledge of defendant Miguel Alves.”
