Crime in Luanda ‘stable’ despite feelings of insecurity

Luanda police said this Friday that the crime situation in the Angolan capital is “stable”, although isolated cases are causing some feelings of insecurity in response to public shock over the murder of a university professor.

“The crime situation in Luanda is stable, with some incidents. Luanda is a cosmopolitan, dynamic city (…). On New Year’s Eve we had a positive report on public safety, but we still have to cover these isolated cases that end up in a sense of disadvantage and a sense of uncertainty,” said Superintendent Nestor Gubel, spokesman for the Luanda Police Department this Friday .

Speaking to Lusa after the murder on public roads of renowned Angolan sociologist, commentator and university professor Laurindo Vieira on Thursday in Talaton, Nestor said efforts were being made to find those responsible for the crime.

Angolan society expressed shock at the death of a man who was also the rector of the University of Gregorio Semedo, shot dead next to his car as he left a bank, in the Patriota area, municipality of Talatona, south of Luanda.

Images circulating on social media showed the sighs of a defeated man who was allegedly shot dead on a motorcycle.

The representative of the National Police Directorate of the province of Luanda denied the absence of police patrols in Talaton and assured that there were police in the same area where the teacher was shot, given, however, that the actions of the criminals were very fast.

“The police came and went further down, it’s not that the area was unguarded, the approach was quick, they wounded the victim in the legs, but it’s not that the area wasn’t patrolled,” he explained. . .

Measures are being taken: “To find out who committed this crime, to conduct clarification among family members and society,” he said.

“The criminals will be brought to justice,” he assured.

Nestor Gubel also assured that the Ministry of Internal Affairs continues to work “hard” to ensure public order and tranquility.

“But we must look at these signs, taking into account not only the coverage of these cases in the media, but also in those areas where crimes are inevitable, especially violent ones,” he concluded.

Laurindo Vieira, 60, was also rector of the Gregorio Semedo University, whose leadership expressed a deep sense of regret and felt that he stood out as “an outstanding and distinguished Angolan academic whose legacy goes beyond science and academia.” .
