DGS calls for measles vaccination after case emerges in Portugal

The diagnosis of an imported case of measles in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region today prompted the General Directorate of Health (DGS) to renew its call for vaccination following a rise in cases in Europe in 2023.

In a statement, the DGS indicated that the case of measles was diagnosed in a 20-month-old child who does not reside in Portugal and has not been vaccinated, who is hospitalized and “clinically stable and expected to be discharged in the coming days,” and that he is not present. There are still records of infection.

“To date, no other concomitant cases of measles have been identified,” the DSS emphasized, adding that “a detailed investigation of the situation is being carried out, which includes collecting clinical, laboratory and epidemiological information on the case, investigating its origin, identifying close contacts in the community and applying appropriate control measures.”
